Were any struck in the UK? I bought it from an antiques dealer in the UK at a fair for a couple of pounds, he didn't know what it was. Neither did I I just liked it and its quite large.

hi.not sure if any were officialy minted in Britain.it was a good find for a few pounds.i am not sure if your coin is official or not but it is a good looking coin and can be quite expensive in mid to high grade.regards.Robert.

I believe your coins is supposed to be a Postumus AE Double Sestertius of the RIC 143 variety. It should read IMP C M CASS LAT POSTVMVS P F AVG on the obverse and LAETITIA with AVG (rejoicing of the emperor) below the Galley (Galley should have 3 or 4 rowers, yours is worn in that area). Postumus was a break away 'Gallic' Emperor who ruled over Gaul, Germania, Britannia and Iberia and I believe the large portion of his coins were minted in Lyons and Lugdunum so he did mint coin in Britannia.

The only other thing I would say about this coin is that it looks a bit odd when it comes to the inscription and the way the galley is depicted but it might just be a variety I have not seen before.
