I have a 2008 British one pound coin, the new shield design, which appears to have a minting error. The usual coin has the word 'ONE' on the left and 'POUND' on the right of the shield, but this coin is missing the word 'ONE'.

I have searched everywhere but cannot see any other known instances of this error. I believe the coin to be 100% genuine; weight, inscription, detail all match legitimate coins.

Has anyone out there ever seen this error on this coin? Any ideas on the worth of this coin?

Many thanks in advance,
Graham

Graham,
It is likely that the lettering in the die has been filled with grease, or some other debris that has resulted in the lettering not being present. Do you have any images of the coin?

Thanks for your reply Colin.

I've attached an image of the said coin. Looking forward to your comments.

Thanks

HI,
I'm not a coin collector and just signed onto this forum after searching online for details of exactly this fault on a pound coin.
I received one in change a few days ago.
Interestingly I received 4 new pound coins in the change for a fiver, all were clearly new and shiny and 2009 shield design. I thought at the time that the shop must have got a tillfull of new coins for the morning trade.
Afterwards, as I went to spend one I noticed the word 'one' missing so held kept it. I still have the other three coins I received with it but they appear to be complete and have the word 'one' correctly (it looks OK) stamped. Just the one coin is missing the word completely.
It's not a bad stamping or dirt in the die. The surface is clean and shiny with absolutely no sign of anything where the word 'one' should be.
