Hi everyone

A mate of mine at work has brought in a coin and was wondering what it was. It looks like a Chinese cash but I am completely at sea with these.

The coin is dark brown (as opposed to the two tone brassy appearance of the cash I've seen), and measures 26.5mm. She tells me that she got it when she was in East Java - which isn't to say it's actually from East Java, but that information may tell someone something, I don't know.

I can't give you a photo but my artist's impression is attached.

We'd be grateful if someone could tell me what the coin is, the rough date, and if possible what the writing says.

Many thanks

Mule

It would appear from your drawing to be from the Kuang Hsu era, ca. 1850 or so, and from either Board of Public Works mint or maybe Kwantung province - based on the shape of the one character on the reverse where there are just the two characters.

Many Chinese coins are found in East Java. Perhaps a few contemporary fakes are there; the coin illustrated should show you what a good specimen will look like!

For beginners: I have created a small booklet, you may download it here:

This should help identify coins back to the Song Dynasty.

Thanks David,

It looks like a great and handy ebook. May I suggest you also post a link to it in our Numismatic Reasource Centre here:

As I'm sure many future visitors will find it useful.

Regards,
Hus

Thank you to everyone for their help and advice with this!

I hope my taking so long to reply didn't seem rude, I have to rely on public internet access (no PC aaargh!) and have been without for some time.

I've told the woman at work who was asking, and she was really intrigued and sends her thanks too.
